In partnership with the City of Cape Town, CTEET has begun rolling out the River Ambassadors Programme, which aims to upskill and empower youth from low-income communities.  These River Ambassadors will gain the skills and experience required to manage and rehabilitate the degraded urban river systems, eventually drawing communities into this healthy, green open space. Part of the River Ambassadors’ training lies with security and making the river corridors safer. In having communities build a relationship with a space, safety is paramount and the River Ambassadors will be first responders to incidents as well as being eyes and ears on the ground. Hlomla Dali was appointed as the Project Manager in December 2019, engaging with City Departments and various stakeholders and getting to grips with the management activities ahead of the 18 River Ambassadors starting in March. So far the group has taken part in Water Safety training conducted by the NSRI, with some receiving First Aid training. The accredited training in Nature Conservation: Resource Guardianship will only begin once the Covid-19 movement restrictions have passed.
