South Africa honours Nelson Mandela on July 18th by dedicating 67 minutes to making a difference in communities that are close to their hearts. This year, Nature Care Fund’s Small Grants Facility recipient, ARKYS Outreach, teamed up with local artists to show their appreciation for the incredible Table Mountain National Park Marine Unit!

These dedicated rangers protect 1000 square kilometres of ocean and coastline, stretching from Mouille Point to Muizenberg. This diverse marine area includes iconic landmarks including Cape Point, the Great African Sea Forest, Boulders African penguin colony, a West Coast rock lobster sanctuary and Duiker Island Cape fur seal colony. The marine unit works tirelessly to protect this area from illegal fishing and over-harvesting.

To support the unit’s vital work, ARKYS and the artists are creating a vibrant mural on the walls of the Marine Unit’s car park. This mural will be used to educate local schools and communities.

The TMNP Marine Unit is also transforming the rangers’ break room and backyard into a relaxing haven. This will include a fresh coat of paint, comfortable furniture, and calming greenery. Imagine a space with a braai area, eco-friendly benches, and planter boxes filled with indigenous plants – a perfect retreat after long patrols.

This project relies on your generosity! Through monetary donations, you can play a part in supporting our marine heroes. Learn more and contribute here: https://www.givengain.com/campaign/mandela-day-2024–tmnp-marine-uni
