Explore with us as we delve into the essentials of the Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Mapping and Geographic Information System (GIS) Basic short course, meticulously curated and presented by the Unmanned Aviation Academy. Our esteemed participants, comprising Nature Connect conservation managers and Groen Sebenza interns, embarked on a transformative journey through this hands-on program. This practical course not only opened doors to the skies but equipped participants with invaluable skills to enhance their conservation efforts.

The course provided a blend of theory and hands-on experience, allowing attendees not just to fly drones but also to understand the intricacies of UAS technology. From mastering flight planning software to practical sessions in drone operation, attendees gained a comprehensive understanding of utilising unmanned aircraft systems for mapping conservation areas.

What sets this course apart is that attendees didn’t just passively observe; they actively engaged through practical exercises, honing abilities in processing the data captured during drone flights, which extends to using GIS software, where attendees learnt to interpret maps, perform basic calculations, and undertake various functions crucial to conservation management.  This course gave attendees the tools to analyze and interpret spatial data. This newfound capability empowers Nature Connect conservationists to make informed decisions and implement effective strategies for environmental conservation of their individual unique sites.

Nature Connect is not just an advocate for environmental conservation and environmental education, but also a champion of continuous learning. The Green Skills, Training & Development initiative emphasises the organization’s commitment to fostering a culture of education and skill enhancement, ensuring that its team remains at the forefront of innovative conservation practices.
