The Western Leopard Toad (Amietophrynus pantherinus) is a unique species endemic to the southwestern part of South Africa, particularly Cape Town and the Overberg region. Known for its striking leopard-like spots and characteristic snoring-call heard during the breeding season, this toad plays a vital role in our ecosystem, but it faces significant threats due to habitat loss and road mortality during its migration to the breeding ponds.

That’s why our Nature Care Fund team has been hard at work setting up drift fences at our Western Leopard Toad Underpass Project in Zeekoevlei to ensure the amphibian tunnels are ready in time for the migration. These efforts are crucial to reducing road mortalities and preserving this charismatic species.

A huge thank you to our generousfunders—Leisure Charitable Trust, the Mohamed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, Forvia Foundation, and Hensoldt—for making this project possible!

Keep an eye out for our dedicated evening monitors patrolling the fences, come rain or moonlight, all to protect the Endangered Western Leopard Toad. Together, we’re making a difference for South Africa’s biodiversity.
