The Nature Care Fund

The Nature Care Fund invests in conservation using funds from legislative land transformation processes associated with mitigating biodiversity loss, such as biodiversity offsets, ecological compensation and environmental management noncompliance. We also direct funding from voluntary arrangements where organisations set aside land or resources for conservation, leveraging partnerships with Special Rating Areas or City Improvement Districts, developers, conservation NGOs, ‘friends’ groups and the City of Cape Town.

These partnerships multiply conservation impact by sharing costs and/or resources. Nature Connect amplifies these benefits by placing Green Skills Development interns or learnerships on-site and using these areas as outdoor classrooms. Lastly, as an NPO and Trust, we can hold funds in trust and offer small grants to support grassroots environmental conservation NGOs.

Legal Obligations

We have developed innovative mechanisms to steward biodiversity by securing funding through legislative processes associated with development. These mechanisms include:

  1. Biodiversity offset mechanisms
  2. Compensation mechanisms
  3. Property development commitments

Voluntary Contributions

Nature Connect are committed to partnerships, which allow for voluntary contributions towards conservation.

These contributions may be “once off” (typical donor funding), and project specific. Or they may be voluntary, come from multiple sources, and be long-term in nature (such as funding for a particular piece of high biodiversity value land).
